Behind The Scenes: How Malaysian Malls Jazz Up Their Interiors With Festive Decorations
Festive seasons surely do not kick in the festive or holiday mood until the malls in the cities look pretty and fascinating, giving the feel of festivity to the city folks. So, what really goes into setting up the malls for every single festival celebrated in Malaysia? What is the expertise required? Let’s take a look at what happens behind the scenes in turning the malls into holiday heaven for many of us.
Every mall will present a uniquely captivating theme for every festive season in order to create an ambience that not only attracts the visitors to take pictures of the mall but also to engage with the promotional activities being organized by various partners. It has become an integral part of malls in their effort to create a lasting relationship with customers.
The preparation for mall decoration would usually kick off months before any festive season and the visual merchandising team of a mall would be in charge of the whole arrangement. The team would brainstorm on the type of mood that they would like to create. From there, the idea is transferred onto a visual board and presented to the management team. The team later works on the budget and the selection of contractors who could take up the job while adhering to the mall’s safety requirement. The mall’s marketing team, on the hand, works with strategic partners for promotional campaigns.
Let’s look at some of the notable features of decoration for each festive season in Malaysia:
Shopping Mall Chinese New Year CNY Decoration
Long giant dragon dazzling in mighty red is one of the most common yet very warm and welcoming decoration for any mall during the Chinese New Year season. The Pavilion KL usually features very grand dragons over 100m in length.
Shopping Mall Christmas Decoration
Nothing beats the holiday mood during Xmas and the snowy effect coupled with Christmas Santa and boxes of gifts neatly placed around the Christmas tree would never go out of style. For most shoppers, it is time to bring their kids to just soak in the atmosphere that gives them a sense of snowy festive celebration.
Shopping Mall Hari Raya Decoration
Something malls would never miss is their effort to bring back the “kampung spirit” during Hari Raya by decorating malls with village huts and ketupat. This often brings back the “balik kampung” spirit for the city residents who are looking forward, heading to their hometowns.
Shopping Mall Deepavali Decoration
What would best represent Deepavali other than pretty mannequins dolled up in colourful sarees and the notable traditional snack of Muruku. Other than these, we can also very often see malls decorating their entrances with colourful “Kolam”, which is an art created using powdered rice that comes in multiple colours.
